Trust begins with calibrated expectations

AI onboarding often demonstrates possibility while leaving boundaries vague. This creates a short-term impression of capability and a long-term problem of confidence. A useful experience explains the kinds of tasks the system handles well, the inputs that improve its work and the situations that require verification.

Expectation-setting should be specific to the product context. Generic warnings are easy to ignore. A clear example, a visible limitation and an appropriate next action are more useful than a broad disclaimer.

Uncertainty must help people decide

A confidence score is not automatically meaningful. People need to understand what uncertainty relates to, how it affects the current task and what action is proportionate. The design challenge is to translate uncertainty into decision support without pretending to remove it.

Depending on the consequence, the interface may need to show source material, an alternative interpretation, a reason for the recommendation or a request for additional information.

Control is a workflow, not a button

A stop button does not create meaningful control if people cannot inspect, correct or reverse what happened. Trustworthy interaction includes visible system status, editable assumptions, confirmation at consequential moments and a traceable activity history.

Human escalation should not be treated as failure. In many contexts it is the responsible completion of the experience.

Design recovery before the happy path is complete

AI systems will misunderstand, overreach and produce outputs that do not fit the situation. Recovery patterns should help a person identify the problem, correct the input, refine the scope, discard the result or route the task elsewhere.

When recovery is designed late, the interface usually falls back on apology messages. When it is designed early, recovery becomes part of the product model.
